New surgery aims to stop debilitating arm swelling in cancer patients

NCT ID NCT03428581

Summary

This study tested whether a special surgical technique performed during lymph node removal could prevent lymphedema—a painful, chronic swelling of the arm. It involved 264 patients with breast cancer or melanoma who were having lymph nodes removed from their armpit. Half received the new technique, which re-routes lymphatic fluid, and all were followed for three years to see if it reduced swelling.
