New approach aims to ease silent suffering of dementia patients in pain

Summary

This study is testing a new training and support program for nursing home staff to help them better recognize and treat pain in residents who have dementia. The program involves a nurse working with staff for a year to improve pain assessment and management. Researchers will compare this intensive program to basic staff education to see which is more effective at reducing pain for 300 residents across 12 nursing homes.
