One more hour on the ventilator: could it save lives in the ICU?

NCT ID NCT07324460

First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 21 times

Summary

This study looks at whether giving ICU patients one more hour of breathing support after they pass a breathing test can lower the chance of needing the breathing tube again or dying within a week. About 4,000 adults who have been on a ventilator for more than 72 hours will be randomly assigned to either get that extra hour or be taken off the ventilator right away. The goal is to find a better way to safely remove breathing tubes.
