Can a common Anti-Nausea drug make colonoscopy prep easier for children?

NCT ID NCT05439772

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 38 times

Summary

This pilot study tested whether ondansetron (Zofran), a drug used for nausea, can improve bowel preparation for colonoscopy in children aged 2 to 20. 41 participants took either ondansetron or a placebo before drinking the bowel-cleansing solution. Researchers measured how clean the bowel was and how much discomfort children felt. The goal is to make the prep process less unpleasant.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

What this could lead to

If it works, ondansetron could make bowel preparation for colonoscopy more tolerable for children by reducing nausea and vomiting.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study with only 41 participants, so results may not apply to all children. The drug may not significantly improve bowel prep quality or symptoms.
