New drug combo could shrink deadly kidney cancer clots before surgery

NCT ID NCT05969496

First seen Apr 14, 2026 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 7 times

Summary

This study tests whether giving two drugs (pembrolizumab and axitinib) before surgery can shrink tumor clots in the main vein (inferior vena cava) for people with kidney cancer. About 17 adults with clear cell kidney cancer and a vein clot will receive the drugs for 12 weeks, then have surgery. The goal is to see if shrinking the clot makes surgery safer and improves long-term outcomes.
