Scientists investigate link between gut bacteria and breast implant infections
NCT ID NCT05020574
First seen Mar 22, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 17 times
Summary
This study looks at how antibiotics change the bacteria in the gut and breast tissue after mastectomy with implant-based reconstruction. Researchers will collect samples from 200 women with breast cancer or genetic risk to see if certain bacteria make infections more likely. The goal is to understand infection risks better, not to test a new treatment.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Cephalexin (Keflex)
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could help doctors predict and prevent implant infections after mastectomy by understanding the role of bacteria.
What could go wrong
This is an early-phase study focused on feasibility, not a treatment. It may not lead to direct changes in patient care, and results may not apply to all patients.
