First seen Jan 04, 2026 · Last updated Jun 20, 2026 · Updated 20 times
Summary
This phase 3 trial tests whether metformin, a standard diabetes drug, can reduce calcium buildup in leg arteries of people with type 1 diabetes. 230 adults with type 1 diabetes and some complications or risk factors will take either metformin or a placebo for two years. The main goal is to see if metformin slows artery calcification, which can lead to poor circulation and amputation.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Metformin
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a way to slow or prevent dangerous artery hardening in people with type 1 diabetes, potentially reducing amputation risk.
What could go wrong
This is a mid-stage trial with 230 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Metformin is generally safe but can cause stomach upset; it is not proven yet for this use.
