Scientists peer into gut nerves to unravel IBS mysteries

NCT ID NCT01912313

First seen Apr 01, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 20 times

Summary

This study takes small tissue samples from the rectum of people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and healthy volunteers to measure how the nerves in the gut are working. Researchers will use special imaging and other lab techniques to see how these nerves respond to different substances. The goal is to better understand what goes wrong in IBS and find new ways to treat it.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a better understanding of how nerves in the gut behave in IBS, potentially pointing toward new treatment targets.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, observational study focused on developing a technique. It does not test any treatment, so it may not directly lead to new therapies.
