New blood marker may speed up sepsis diagnosis in emergency rooms

NCT ID NCT05296590

First seen May 20, 2026 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study looks at whether a blood test called Monocyte Distribution Width (MDW) can help doctors quickly identify patients with bloodstream infections (bacteremia) in the emergency department. Researchers will check how well MDW levels predict positive blood cultures in 50,000 patients. If MDW proves reliable, it could guide doctors in starting the right antibiotics sooner, improving care for people with serious infections.
