No more needles? new study tests ultrasound-based liver check for kids with rare disease

NCT ID NCT07303140

First seen Jan 04, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 29 times

Summary

This study looks at using liver elastography, a non-invasive ultrasound-like technique, to measure liver fibrosis in children with type III glycogen storage disease (GSDIII). The goal is to see if this method can replace painful liver biopsies for monitoring disease progression. Researchers will analyze data from 30 patients aged 0 to 21 years who have already had at least one elastography measurement.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that liver elastography is a reliable way to monitor liver fibrosis in children with GSDIII, reducing the need for invasive biopsies.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The technique may not be as accurate in children as in adults.
