Can we predict kidney damage in young diabetics before it starts?
NCT ID NCT05530356
First seen Aug 24, 2026 · Last updated Aug 25, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study follows adolescents with youth-onset type 2 diabetes, along with obese and lean peers, into young adulthood to see how their kidneys change over time. Using advanced imaging and kidney function tests, researchers aim to understand early signs of diabetic kidney disease. The findings could help identify who is at risk and guide future prevention efforts.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Diagnostic agents (aminohippurate, iohexol, dextran) and imaging procedures (MRI, PET, kidney biopsy)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could reveal how kidney damage progresses in young people with type 2 diabetes, pointing to earlier detection and prevention strategies.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational follow-up, not a treatment trial, so it won't directly test a therapy. The small sample and exploratory nature may limit how broadly the findings apply.
