Scientists probe IL-6's role in amino acid control

NCT ID NCT06721910

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 34 times

Summary

This completed study in 26 healthy volunteers tested whether blocking interleukin-6 (IL-6) changes how glucagon lowers amino acid levels in the blood. Participants received either a placebo or tocilizumab, a drug that blocks IL-6, followed by hormone infusions to mimic fasting and fed states. Researchers measured amino acid levels and other markers to understand IL-6's role in protein balance.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

tocilizumab (a drug that blocks interleukin-6 receptor)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help understand how IL-6 contributes to amino acid imbalances in conditions like diabetes or liver disease.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage proof-of-concept study in healthy people, not patients. Results may not apply to real-world diseases.

As listed by the trial registrant
