Stomach acid in lungs? new study links hiatal hernia to hidden lung scarring
NCT ID NCT05716022
First seen Mar 17, 2026 · Last updated May 20, 2026 · Updated 13 times
Summary
This study looked at whether a hiatal hernia (a condition where part of the stomach pushes into the chest) might cause tiny, unnoticed lung damage that could lead to scarring over time. Researchers measured stomach contents like pepsin in the lung fluid of 14 adults—some with a hiatal hernia and some without. They also checked blood for early signs of lung injury. The goal was to find hidden lung problems early, before they become serious.
