Quick MRI spots hidden breast cancers after lumpectomy

NCT ID NCT03664778

First seen Jan 17, 2026 · Last updated Jun 20, 2026 · Updated 21 times

Summary

This study tested whether a fast (abbreviated) breast MRI can detect cancers that were not seen on a standard mammogram in women who had previously undergone breast-conserving therapy for breast cancer. Researchers recruited 184 women who had a negative mammogram within the past six months and were symptom-free. Each participant received a fast breast MRI to see if it could find any hidden tumors.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

abbreviated (fast) breast MRI

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that a quick MRI is a reliable way to catch hidden breast cancers after standard mammography, potentially improving early detection.

What could go wrong

This is a small, single-center study with only 184 participants. The fast MRI may not detect all cancers and could have false alarms, leading to unnecessary biopsies.

Conditions
