Fast MRI finds cancers mammograms miss in breast cancer survivors
NCT ID NCT03664778
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a fast (abbreviated) breast MRI can detect cancers that mammograms miss in women who have already been treated for breast cancer with lumpectomy and radiation. Researchers recruited 184 women who had a normal 3D mammogram and gave them a quick MRI. The goal was to see if the MRI could find small, hidden cancers in the breast or nearby lymph nodes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
abbreviated (fast) breast MRI
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that a fast MRI is a useful extra screening tool to catch cancers that mammograms miss in women who have had breast-conserving therapy.
What could go wrong
This is a small, single-center study with only 184 participants, so results may not apply to all women. The fast MRI may also find false alarms that lead to unnecessary biopsies.
