Common sedative may stop dangerous heart rhythm after surgery
NCT ID NCT07482540
First seen Apr 04, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 18 times
Summary
This study tests whether the sedative drug dexmedetomidine can prevent new-onset atrial fibrillation (a fast, irregular heartbeat) in the days after mitral valve surgery. Researchers will randomly give 140 adults either the drug or a placebo during and after surgery. The goal is to see if the drug lowers the chance of developing this heart rhythm problem, which can cause complications.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Dexmedetomidine
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a simple way to prevent a common and serious heart rhythm problem after mitral valve surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial (140 people) that hasn't started recruiting yet. The drug may not reduce AFib risk more than placebo, and side effects like low heart rate are possible.
