Summary

This study tests whether the sedative drug dexmedetomidine can prevent new-onset atrial fibrillation (a fast, irregular heartbeat) in the days after mitral valve surgery. Researchers will randomly give 140 adults either the drug or a placebo during and after surgery. The goal is to see if the drug lowers the chance of developing this heart rhythm problem, which can cause complications.
