New hope for elderly cancer patients: drug may ward off Post-Surgery confusion

NCT ID NCT03012984

First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 13 times

Summary

This study tested whether adding dexmedetomidine, a mild sedative, to standard pain relief could lower the risk of delirium (sudden confusion) in older adults after cancer surgery. Delirium is common in elderly patients and can lead to worse recovery. The trial involved 1,500 patients aged 65 and older across multiple hospitals, comparing those who received the drug with those who did not. The goal was to see if better sleep quality from the drug could prevent this serious complication.
