Trainees vs. X-Ray: can bedside ultrasound spot a collapsed lung?
NCT ID NCT07018856
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study explores whether medical trainees (residents and fellows) can learn to use lung ultrasound to detect a collapsed lung (pneumothorax) after heart surgery. About 120 adults will have their lungs checked by a trainee with ultrasound and also get a standard chest X-ray after chest tube removal. The goal is to see if trainee-performed ultrasound is accurate and practical enough to plan a larger study.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could show that bedside lung ultrasound by trainees is a safe and effective alternative to chest X-ray, potentially changing post-surgery care.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small feasibility study (120 participants) focused on training and procedures, not on proving clinical outcomes. Results may not apply to all hospitals or patients.

Who can take part

Who is studied
This study will enroll adult patients (18 years or older) who have undergone cardiac surgery and are scheduled for chest and/or mediastinal chest tube removal in the cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU). Participants will be recruited from three high-volume cardiac centers in Ontario, Canada: Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto General Hospital, and London Health Sciences Centre. Patients must be able to safely undergo both lung ultrasound and chest X-ray after chest tube removal. Individuals with severe lung disease or who are mechanically ventilated at the time of eligibility screening will be excluded.
