Trainees vs. X-Ray: can bedside ultrasound spot collapsed lungs?

NCT ID NCT07018856

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 13, 2026 · Updated 24 times

Summary

This study explores whether medical trainees (residents and fellows) can learn to use lung ultrasound to detect a collapsed lung (pneumothorax) after heart surgery. About 120 adults who recently had heart surgery and are having chest tubes removed will participate. After tube removal, a trained trainee will perform a bedside ultrasound, and results will be compared to a standard chest X-ray and reviewed by experts. The goal is to see if this approach is feasible and accurate, helping to plan a larger future study.
