Neck ultrasound could revolutionize heart attack prevention for arthritis patients
NCT ID NCT07611747
First seen Jun 03, 2026 · Last updated Jun 21, 2026 · Updated 4 times
Summary
This study tests whether using a carotid ultrasound (a neck scan) to detect hidden plaque in arteries can better prevent heart attacks and strokes in people with inflammatory rheumatic diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. About 1,944 participants aged 50 and older will be randomly assigned to either standard care or the ultrasound-guided strategy, where those with plaque receive high-dose statins. The goal is to see if this approach reduces major cardiovascular events over four years.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
High-intensity statins (atorvastatin or rosuvastatin)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a better way to identify and treat heart disease risk in people with inflammatory rheumatic diseases, potentially preventing heart attacks and strokes.
What could go wrong
This is a phase 4 trial, but results may not apply to all patients. The open-label design could introduce bias, and the strategy may not significantly reduce cardiovascular events.
Conditions
The condition(s) this trial relates to.
As listed by the trial registrant
