Could a bipolar medication curb cocaine use in opioid patients?

NCT ID NCT05063201

First seen Jan 24, 2026 · Last updated May 20, 2026 · Updated 15 times

Summary

This study tested whether a low dose of cariprazine, a medication used for bipolar disorder, could help people with both opioid and cocaine use disorders reduce cocaine use. Participants were already stable on buprenorphine-naloxone for opioid use. The trial lasted about 11 weeks, with 26 participants receiving either cariprazine or a placebo, and urine tests tracked cocaine use. The goal was to see if cariprazine could lower the number of cocaine-positive urine samples.
