Aspirin study for kidney patients halted: did the risks outweigh the benefits?

NCT ID NCT03796156

First seen Mar 20, 2026 · Last updated Jun 18, 2026 · Updated 16 times

Summary

This study looked at whether taking a daily low-dose aspirin can help prevent a first heart attack or stroke in people with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Over 4,600 adults with CKD who had never had a heart attack or stroke were randomly assigned to take aspirin or receive usual care. The goal was to see if the benefits of preventing blood clots outweighed the increased risk of bleeding. The study was terminated early, and results are being analyzed.
