Aspirin study for kidney patients halted early: did the risks outweigh the benefits?

NCT ID NCT03796156

First seen Mar 20, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 7 times

Summary

This study looked at whether taking a daily low-dose aspirin could help prevent a first heart attack or stroke in people with chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD raises the risk of heart problems, but aspirin also increases bleeding risk. Over 4,600 adults with CKD from UK general practices were randomly assigned to take aspirin or receive usual care. The study was stopped early, and results are being analyzed to see if the benefits of preventing clots outweigh the bleeding risks.
