Which anesthetic best reveals seizure spots in the brain?
NCT ID NCT07165262
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study compares two anesthetic drugs, fentanyl and ketamine, to see which one better helps surgeons find seizure-causing brain tissue during epilepsy surgery in children. Eighty-eight children aged 2-18 with brain tumors and epilepsy will receive one of the drugs during surgery. The goal is to improve the accuracy of brain mapping, not to cure the disease.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- fentanyl and ketamine
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could help surgeons better locate seizure-causing brain tissue during surgery, potentially improving outcomes for children with epilepsy.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase study focused on measuring brain activity, not on curing disease. The results may not apply to all patients or lead to direct treatment benefits.
