New imaging trial aims to sharpen diagnosis for Parkinson's, tumors, and more
NCT ID NCT04706910
First seen Feb 10, 2026 · Last updated Jun 20, 2026 · Updated 18 times
Summary
This phase 3 study is testing an improved PET/CT imaging method using a radioactive tracer called 18F-DOPA. Researchers want to see if it can better detect small lesions and reduce image artifacts in patients with conditions like congenital hyperinsulinism, neuroblastoma, neuroendocrine tumors, Parkinson's disease, Lewy body dementia, and brain tumors. About 800 participants will receive an injection of the tracer, and some will also get a diuretic to improve image quality.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
18F-DOPA (a radioactive tracer) and furosemide (a diuretic) for some participants
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to clearer, more accurate PET scans for diagnosing and monitoring several serious diseases.
What could go wrong
This is an imaging optimization study, not a treatment trial. It may not directly improve patient outcomes, and results may not apply to all imaging centers.
Conditions
