Infective endocarditis
MONDO:0000565Infective endocarditis (IE) is an infection of the inner lining of the heart chambers (endocardium) and valves. This condition is sometimes called 'endocarditis,' although it is important to distinguish it from non-infective endocarditis. IE is caused bybacteria, fungi, or other germs invading the bloodstream and attaching to the heart. IE can damagethe heart and cause serious and sometimes fatal complications. It can develop quickly or slowly depending on what type of germ is causing it and whether there is an underlying heart problem. Common symptoms of IE are fever and other flu-like symptoms, but signs and symptoms can vary. It can also cause problems in many other parts of the body besides the heart. IE is typically treated with antibiotics for several weeks; some individuals may need heart surgery to repair or replace heart valves or remove infected heart tissue.

Could a donor heart valve beat Man-Made ones for treating severe valve infections?
Disease control OngoingThis study compares two approaches for replacing an infected aortic valve: using a cryopreserved aortic homograft (a preserved human donor valve) versus conventional mechanical or tissue prosthetic valves. The goal is to see which method leads to fewer complications, such as deat…

Can a tailored antibiotic regimen shorten endocarditis treatment without risk?
Disease control OngoingThis trial investigates whether a shorter course of antibiotics, tailored to each patient's response, can treat left-sided endocarditis as safely as the standard 4-6 week regimen. Adults with endocarditis caused by specific bacteria (Streptococci, Enterococcus faecalis, or Staphy…

Can a tailored antibiotic regimen shorten endocarditis treatment without risk?
Disease control OngoingThis trial investigates whether a shorter course of antibiotics, tailored to each patient's response, can safely treat bacterial endocarditis. Standard treatment lasts 4-6 weeks, but this study tests a personalized approach based on factors like fever and blood tests. The goal is…

New DNA blood test could speed up heart infection diagnosis
Diagnosis OngoingThis study tests a new blood test that looks for bacterial DNA to quickly identify the germ causing infective endocarditis, a serious heart valve infection. Current methods take up to 5 days, delaying the right antibiotics. The study will enroll 200 adults with suspected endocard…

Antibiotics alone or surgery? study tracks which endocarditis patients fare better
Knowledge-focused OngoingInfective endocarditis is an infection of the heart's inner lining or valves. About half of patients need surgery during their hospital stay, while others receive antibiotics alone. Researchers are following 1,046 adults with confirmed endocarditis for up to 24 months to compare …

Study on immune overreaction in heart infections pulled before start
Knowledge-focused CancelledThis study was designed to look at how the immune system might contribute to heart valve damage in people with infective endocarditis, a serious bacterial infection of the heart. Researchers planned to analyze blood and heart valve tissue from patients to see if immune cells mist…

Taiwan study reveals shifting patterns of deadly heart infection
Knowledge-focused OngoingThis study looks at how infective endocarditis, a serious heart infection, has changed in Taiwan between 2006 and 2022. Researchers will analyze data from over 2,200 patients to spot trends in who gets the disease and how it progresses. The goal is to use this information to impr…
