Bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome
MONDO:0015265A lung disorder that is mainly associated with chronic allograft dysfunction after lung transplantation and that is characterized by inflammation and fibrosis of bronchiolar walls that reduce the diameter of the bronchioles and result in progressive and irreversible airflow obstruction.
Also known as: BOOP, constrictive bronchiolitis, organised pneumonia, organized pneumonia, bronchiolitis obliterans with obstructive pulmonary disease, BO, bronchiolitis exudativa, bronchiolitis obliterans

New drug may help lung damage after stem cell transplants
Disease control OngoingThis study tests a new oral drug called alvelestat (MPH966) in adults who have lung damage (bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome) after a stem cell transplant. The drug aims to block an enzyme that may cause lung injury. The trial has two parts: first to find the safest and most eff…

Blood-filtering therapy may slow lung decline in transplant patients
Disease control OngoingThis phase 3 trial tests a treatment called extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) for lung transplant patients who develop bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS), a form of chronic rejection. ECP involves filtering a patient's blood, treating it with a light-sensitive drug, and ret…

Could a cancer drug help lung damage after transplant?
Disease control OngoingThis phase 2 study tests the drug ruxolitinib (Jakafi) in 50 people who developed bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) after a stem cell transplant. BOS is a serious lung condition that causes scarring and breathing problems. The goal is to see if ruxolitinib can improve lung …

Can a smarter oxygen device help lung disease patients move more?
Symptom relief By invitation onlyThis study tests whether using a portable oxygen concentrator (a lightweight, battery-powered device) during walking or exercise helps people with interstitial lung disease (ILD) or COPD feel less breathless and be more active in their daily lives. Twenty-four participants will t…

Can remote rehab help lung patients breathe easier?
Symptom relief OngoingThis pilot study tests whether home-based or video-supervised exercise programs are acceptable and helpful for people with chronic lung diseases like IPF, sarcoidosis, bronchiectasis, asthma, and other interstitial lung diseases. Fifty participants will be randomly assigned to on…

Can a radioactive tracer reveal hidden lung scarring?
Knowledge-focused OngoingThis study tests whether a radioactive tracer called 68Ga-FAPi-46 can light up areas of scarring (fibrosis) in the lungs of people with interstitial lung disease. Participants receive the tracer and undergo a PET/CT scan to see where it collects. The goal is to understand how the…

Could gentle exercise with blood flow restriction help lung disease patients?
Knowledge-focused OngoingThis study tests whether low-intensity aerobic exercise with blood flow restriction (BFR) is safe and effective for people with interstitial lung disease (ILD). BFR uses a cuff to partially block blood flow, which may help build muscle with less strain. Thirty participants will t…

Could faulty stem cells in the airways drive a rare lung disease? a study aims to find out.
Knowledge-focused CancelledThis study explores whether stem cell dysfunction in the small airways causes bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS), a serious lung condition that can occur after a stem cell transplant. Researchers will collect airway cells from people with BOS and healthy volunteers to compar…

Can a simple home breathing test catch lung trouble early in transplant patients?
Knowledge-focused OngoingThis study follows 250 people who have had a donor stem cell transplant to see if respiratory viruses lead to a lung condition called bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS). Participants use a handheld device at home to measure lung function and provide nasal swabs and blood sam…
