Arteriovenous malformations of the brain
MONDO:0007154Cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a congenital malformative communication between the veins and the arteries in the brain in the form of a nidus, an anatomical structure composed of dilated and tangled supplying arterioles and drainage veins with no intervening capillary bed, that can be asymptomatic or cause, depending on the location and the size of the AVM, headaches of varying severity, generalized or focal seizures, focalneurological defects (weakness, numbness, speech difficulties, vision loss) or potentially fatal intracranial hemorrhage in case the AVM ruptures.
Also known as: arteriovenous malformation of the brain, somatic, arteriovenous malformations of the brain, cerebral arteriovenous malformation, intracranial arteriovenous malformation, intracranial haemorrhage in brain cerebrovascular malformations, susceptibility to, somatic mutation, intracranial hemorrhage in brain cerebrovascular malformations, susceptibility to, somatic mutation, Bavm, cerebral arteriovenous malformations

New hope for rare blood vessel disorders: everolimus trial launches
Disease control Not yet recruitingThis phase 2 trial tests the drug everolimus in 67 people with vascular anomalies (abnormal blood vessels) that haven't responded to standard treatments. The goal is to shrink the lesions and improve symptoms. Participants take everolimus daily for 6 months, with doses adjusted b…

Heat therapy could shrink blood vessel clumps without major surgery
Disease control Not yet recruitingThis study tests a minimally invasive procedure called microwave ablation to treat abnormal blood vessel clusters (vascular malformations) that cause pain and swelling. 150 patients will receive one session of this heat-based treatment, guided by ultrasound. Researchers will trac…

Scientists probe sonic hedgehog pathway for clues to brain AVM treatment
Knowledge-focused Not yet recruitingThis study investigates the role of the Sonic Hedgehog signaling pathway in brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), abnormal tangles of blood vessels that can cause bleeding or stroke. Researchers will analyze leftover brain tissue from 20–30 adults undergoing AVM surgery and c…

Brain scans reveal secret language superpower in AVM patients
Knowledge-focused Not yet recruitingThis study will scan the brains of 120 people with brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) to understand why their language stays normal even when the left side of the brain is damaged. Using advanced MRI, researchers will look at how the right hemisphere reorganizes to handle s…

630-Patient study aims to unlock secrets of brain aneurysms and AVMs
Knowledge-focused Not yet recruitingThis observational study will follow 630 people with cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and intracranial aneurysms to learn how these conditions progress and how different treatments perform. Researchers will track imaging success rates and complications over time. The g…

Liquid biopsy may unlock genetic secrets of brain AVMs
Knowledge-focused Not yet recruitingThis study will analyze blood samples from the drainage vein of brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) in 16 adults undergoing embolization. The goal is to identify genetic mutations that may drive these abnormal vessels. Understanding these mutations could pave the way for fut…
