Can a new Weight-Loss shot replace wegovy without stomach trouble?
NCT ID NCT07812597
First seen Sep 10, 2026 · Last updated Sep 11, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Researchers are testing whether adults with obesity can safely switch from semaglutide (Wegovy) to an experimental drug called zovaglutide. The trial enrolls 210 people aged 18 to 75 with a BMI of at least 28 who do not have diabetes. Participants first receive semaglutide injections, then some switch to zovaglutide while others continue semaglutide, and researchers track side effects and whether the switch succeeds.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- zovaglutide, an experimental weight-loss injection
- What this could lead to
- If it works, people with obesity could have another injectable option for weight management, possibly with fewer stomach side effects than current drugs.
- What could go wrong
- This is a phase 2 trial with 210 participants, so safety and tolerability data are early. Switching drugs may cause gastrointestinal side effects or fail to control weight, and results may not apply to everyone.
