New drug cocktail aims to make inoperable kidney tumors removable
NCT ID NCT06794229
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This phase 2 trial is testing a combination of two drugs, zanzalintinib and nivolumab, given before surgery to people with advanced kidney cancer that is hard to remove. The goal is to shrink the tumor enough so that surgery becomes possible. About 69 participants will receive the drugs for 12 weeks, and if the tumor shrinks, they may proceed to surgery or continue the drugs for up to 48 weeks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
zanzalintinib (XL092) and nivolumab (Opdivo)
What this could lead to
If successful, this combination could shrink advanced kidney tumors enough to allow surgery, potentially improving long-term control of the disease.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with no placebo group. The treatment may not work for everyone, and side effects from the drug combination could be significant.
