Can teens help each other beat depression? huge school trial aims to find out
NCT ID NCT06955195
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a school-based program, where students organize mental health talks, workshops, and activities, can improve wellbeing and reduce depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts among 18,000 Hong Kong secondary school students. Over three years, 130 schools will participate, with some receiving the program and others serving as controls. The goal is to see if this peer-led approach fosters a supportive school environment and encourages help-seeking.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
School-based mental health program (student-led workshops, talks, and activities)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide an evidence-based, scalable model to improve mental health and reduce distress among adolescents in schools.
What could go wrong
This is a large observational and early-stage trial, not a drug study. Results depend on student engagement and school implementation, and may not apply to other regions or age groups.
