Can video games keep your brain sharp? trial pits xbox against Paper-and-Pencil training
NCT ID NCT07809412
First seen Sep 09, 2026 · Last updated Sep 10, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Researchers are comparing two ways to boost attention and executive function in healthy adults aged 50 and older. One group plays Xbox exergames that use a Kinect motion sensor to track body movements. The other group does structured cognitive training at home. Both groups complete 12 sessions over six weeks, and researchers measure changes in attention, memory, and thinking speed before and after.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Xbox-based exergames using the Kinect motion sensor
- What this could lead to
- If exergames prove as effective as structured cognitive training, they could offer a more engaging way for older adults to maintain attention and thinking skills at home.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small study of 20 people, so any differences between the two approaches may be due to chance. The results may not apply to other age groups or to people with cognitive problems.
