New heart scan may predict deadly rupture after heart attack

NCT ID NCT06450912

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study looked at 250 people who had a severe type of heart attack involving bleeding into the heart muscle. Researchers tested whether a measurement called the wall strain index ratio, taken from a heart MRI, could identify areas of the heart at risk of tearing (rupture). The goal was to find a better way to predict this rare but often fatal complication.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a simple imaging test to identify patients at highest risk of heart rupture after a heart attack, allowing for closer monitoring or earlier intervention.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. The biomarker needs further validation in larger, diverse populations before it can be used in routine care.
