Friendly mosquitoes take a bite out of dengue in landmark trial

NCT ID NCT04514107

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested a clever way to prevent dengue fever: releasing mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia bacteria into neighborhoods in Brazil. Over four years, researchers compared areas that got these special mosquitoes plus usual control methods to areas with usual methods alone. The goal was to see if the Wolbachia mosquitoes could lower the number of new infections in children aged 6-11. The approach aims to stop disease before it starts, not treat it after.
