New wisdom tooth surgery technique aims to prevent gum problems

NCT ID NCT05722509

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested a surgical technique called 'distal flap reduction' to reduce deep gum pockets that can form after wisdom tooth extraction. 72 adults with gum pockets behind their second molars were treated either with the new technique or standard extraction. The goal was to see if the new method leads to shallower pockets and less pain after healing.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Distal flap reduction procedure

What this could lead to

If successful, this technique could reduce the need for a second surgery to treat gum pockets after wisdom tooth extraction.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study with only 72 participants. The results may not apply to everyone, and the technique requires enough healthy gum tissue to be performed.
