AI heart scanner could predict sudden cardiac death

NCT ID NCT05890716

First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 24 times

Summary

This study is testing whether an AI program called Willem can analyze ECG recordings as accurately as a human cardiologist. Over 5,000 high-risk heart patients will have their ECGs reviewed by both the AI and a doctor. The goal is to see if the AI can detect dangerous heart rhythms early, which could help prevent serious events like cardiac arrest or sudden death.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

AI-powered ECG analysis software (Willem™)

What this could lead to

If successful, this AI could help doctors spot dangerous heart rhythms faster and more accurately, potentially preventing heart attacks and sudden cardiac death.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. The AI may not perform as well in real-world settings, and results may not apply to all patients.

Conditions

The condition(s) this trial relates to.

Arrhythmias, Cardiac cardiac arrest cardiac rhythm disease cardiomyopathy Death, Sudden, Cardiac heart disorder
