Wildfire smoke study aims to uncover hidden lung risks
NCT ID NCT07536178
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study will expose 24 healthy adults to different levels of wildfire smoke in a safe, controlled room to see how it affects their lungs and brain. Researchers want to understand why some people may be more vulnerable to long-term lung diseases like asthma, COPD, and lung cancer. The goal is to find early warning signs of damage before disease develops.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Woodsmoke (Lodgepole Pine) exposure
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help identify biological markers that predict who is at risk for chronic lung diseases from wildfire smoke.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-stage study (24 people) that only looks at short-term effects in a controlled lab, not real-world repeated exposure. It may not translate to long-term health outcomes.
