Stroke recovery breakthrough? scientists hunt for biomarkers to predict HIIT success
NCT ID NCT06059872
First seen Mar 31, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 14 times
Summary
This study is looking for biological clues to explain why some stroke survivors improve their walking with high-intensity interval training (HIIT) while others do not. Researchers will measure blood lactate, brain chemicals, and blood flow in 55 veterans with chronic stroke. The goal is to build a model that predicts who will respond to HIIT, making rehab more personalized.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) cycling sessions
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors predict who will benefit from HIIT after a stroke, personalizing rehabilitation.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage observational study (55 participants) focused on finding predictors, not testing a treatment. The results may not apply to all stroke survivors.
