First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested a 12-week program called Health Homes/Healthy Families for people who called the 2-1-1 helpline. The program included coaching calls, text messages, and mailed materials to encourage healthy eating and prevent weight gain. A total of 512 adults aged 18 to 70 with a BMI of 20 or higher took part. The goal was to see if the program improved diet quality and reduced calorie intake compared to receiving only standard healthy eating pamphlets.

What this could lead to

If successful, this program could offer a low-cost way to help people maintain a healthy weight through simple coaching and tips.

What could go wrong

This is a completed study, so results are available. However, the program is short (12 weeks) and may not lead to lasting changes. Also, it only included English speakers with a BMI of 20 or higher, so it may not apply to everyone.
