Summary

Researchers are testing a 16-week program for adults aged 60 and older who carry excess body fat and do not exercise regularly. Participants are assigned to one of three groups: resistance training alone, resistance training plus group cognitive behavioral therapy, or both of those plus nutritional guidance for a higher-protein diet. The study measures changes in muscle mass, body weight, strength, metabolic health, thinking skills, and quality of life to see whether adding psychological and dietary support to exercise brings extra benefits.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
a 16-week program combining resistance training, group cognitive behavioral therapy, and nutritional guidance for a higher-protein diet
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a practical, low-cost way to help older adults with excess weight keep muscle, lose fat, and stay independent.
What could go wrong
The study is small, with 54 participants, and runs for only 16 weeks, so any benefits may fade or not apply to other groups. Adding therapy and diet advice may not improve results beyond exercise alone.
