First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This pilot study tested whether taking doxycycline once a week can prevent bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in cisgender women who are already taking HIV PrEP. Sixty women in Kisumu, Kenya, received the antibiotic weekly under direct observation for six months. The main goal was to see how well they stuck to the regimen and whether they found it acceptable.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

doxycycline

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a simple weekly pill to help prevent bacterial STIs in women at risk.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study with only 60 participants and no control group, so results may not apply broadly. Adherence and side effects could limit effectiveness.
