Smart watch could spot surgery complications before doctors do
NCT ID NCT07646730
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether a wearable device can give early warning of complications after chest surgery. The device tracks heart rate, oxygen levels, temperature, and activity from hospital admission to 30 days after discharge. Researchers will first use past data to build a warning model, then test it in 650 new patients to see how early and accurately it predicts problems like infection or irregular heartbeat.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- wearable device (monitors heart rate, oxygen, temperature, activity, sleep)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to a way to catch serious complications like lung infections or heart rhythm problems days earlier than usual, helping doctors intervene sooner.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-stage study to develop and test a model, not a proven tool. The device only monitors and does not change care, so it may not actually improve outcomes.
