New numbing cocktail may ease pain of central line insertion
NCT ID NCT07299383
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 24, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether a special numbing mixture called WALANT could reduce pain during central venous catheter (CVC) insertion better than standard lidocaine. Sixty-four trauma or dialysis patients were randomly assigned to receive either WALANT or lidocaine before the procedure. Pain was measured using a visual scale. The goal was to see if WALANT offers a more comfortable and potentially safer alternative for this common but uncomfortable procedure.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
WALANT solution (lidocaine, isotonic saline, sodium bicarbonate, epinephrine)
What this could lead to
If WALANT works better, it could offer a more comfortable and safer way to numb the area for central line placement, especially in patients at risk of bleeding.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with only 64 participants. The results may not apply to all patients or settings, and the technique requires a 20-minute wait before the procedure.
