Could a tiny patch replace wires for monitoring sick kids?
NCT ID NCT04627766
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing a small, sticky chest patch called VT-Patch that can continuously track a child's heart rate, oxygen levels, breathing rate, and temperature. Researchers will put the patch on 48 children in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) for 8 hours and compare its readings to the standard hospital monitors. If the patch works well, it could one day allow children to be monitored more comfortably and even after they leave the PICU, helping doctors spot early signs of trouble.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
VT-Patch (a small chest-worn device that continuously tracks vital signs)
What this could lead to
If accurate, this patch could allow safer monitoring of children after they leave the intensive care unit, helping catch problems early.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early validation study with only 48 children. The device may not be as accurate as standard monitors, and results may not apply to all skin tones or medical conditions.
