Could virtual reality replace traditional nursing training for port catheter skills?
NCT ID NCT07674108
First seen Jun 29, 2026 · Last updated Jun 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares virtual reality (VR) simulation training plus traditional classroom teaching against traditional teaching alone for nursing students learning implanted port catheter care. Eighty second-year nursing students will be randomly assigned to either group. The VR training uses a Meta Quest 3 headset with two scenarios: safe catheter access and complication management. Researchers will measure changes in knowledge, learning satisfaction, and motivation to see if VR enhances education.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Virtual reality simulation-based training
What this could lead to
If effective, VR training could become a standard tool for teaching complex clinical skills, potentially improving patient safety and student confidence.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage educational study with 80 students from one university, so results may not apply broadly. The VR system's novelty might inflate motivation scores temporarily.
