Summary
This study tests whether guided mindfulness exercises delivered through a virtual reality (VR) headset can help older adults with symptoms of anxiety and depression. Participants in Ecuador will be randomly assigned to either VR mindfulness sessions or a simple phone check-in. The trial measures changes in mood, mindfulness, and daily activity levels to see if this low-cost technology offers a meaningful benefit.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Mindfulness sessions delivered through a virtual reality (VR) device
- What this could lead to
- If effective, this could offer a low-cost, accessible way to help older adults manage symptoms of anxiety and depression, especially in low- and middle-income settings.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively small trial, and the benefits of VR mindfulness may not be greater than a simple phone check-in. Some participants may find the VR headset uncomfortable or experience dizziness.
