First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study follows 29 children with sickle cell disease who receive MEOPA gas for pain during a crisis. Researchers will check their vitamin B12 levels before and after treatment, and again at 7 days and 1 month. The goal is to see how often MEOPA causes a B12 deficiency and whether some children are more at risk.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

MEOPA (a medical gas used for pain and sedation)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could help doctors understand which children are at risk of vitamin B12 deficiency from MEOPA and how to prevent it.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early observational study with only 29 children, so results may not apply to everyone. It is not testing a new treatment.
