New Tooth-Saving technique could replace root canals

NCT ID NCT07355140

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tested a less invasive treatment called vital pulp therapy against standard root canals for teeth with severe pulp inflammation. In the new approach, dentists removed only the inflamed pulp and placed a natural blood-derived material (PRF) to help the tooth heal. Forty-three adults completed the 12-month follow-up. The goal was to see if the tooth could stay alive and healthy without needing a full root canal.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and bioceramic putty
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a less invasive alternative to root canals, preserving more of the natural tooth.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with only 43 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The procedure may fail if inflammation persists.
