Skin cancer drug may reduce need for major surgery

NCT ID NCT02667574

First seen Apr 29, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 6 times

Summary

This study tested the drug vismodegib in 55 people with advanced basal cell carcinoma (a type of skin cancer) to see if taking it before surgery could make the tumor smaller and allow for a less extensive operation. Participants took the drug for a period before their planned surgery. The main goal was to compare the planned surgery size before and after treatment. While the drug may help control the disease and reduce surgical burden, ongoing management or recurrence risk remains.
