First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether wearing a virtual reality headset with calming scenes and hypnotic speech can lower pain and anxiety during minimally invasive leg artery surgery done under local anesthesia. About 90 adults with peripheral artery disease will take part. The main goal is to see if VR reduces the worst pain felt during the procedure.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
virtual reality headset with hypnotic speech
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a drug-free way to manage pain and anxiety during certain surgeries, reducing the need for opioids.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 90 people. The effect may be small or not work for everyone, and VR headsets may not be comfortable for all patients during surgery.
